Driving examiner strike – candidates to attend tests

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) is urging all driving test candidates booked to take a test on Thursday 30 June to attend as usual regardless of the threat of strike action by examiners who are members of the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union.

DSA’s chief executive Rosemary Thew said:

“Not all examiners are members of the PCS union and even if they are, we cannot be sure that they will not turn up for work. We therefore want candidates to attend so that practical tests can be delivered if possible. Theory tests are not affected and will be taking place as planned.

“Candidates who turn up but are unable to take their tests because of industrial action will not have to contact DSA to re-book. They should hear from us with a new date within five to ten working days. We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause and will do everything we can to minimise disruption for our customers.”

If no examiner is available for a test, a new date will be rebooked automatically by DSA and the candidate will be sent details of the new test. If candidates fail to attend they will not be able to claim out-of-pocket expenses if their tests are cancelled and they will need to rebook their own tests.

DSA’s customer service centre for practical tests might also be affected by the strike action. Customers who wish to book a practical test will still be able to use DSA’s internet booking service at direct.gov.uk/drivingtest.

Details about claiming out-of-pocket expenses can be found at direct.gov.uk/drivingtestexpenses.

Some driving tests may be affected by winter weather over the next few days.

The Met Office has forecast colder weather with snow showers becomingwinter driving advice increasingly likely. Some parts of the country may have significant snowfall.

If you’re due to take your practical test, follow the advice given on your appointment email or letter. You should call your test centre only if there is snow or ice in your local area on the day of your test.

A new appointment date is usually sent within three working days. This may take longer when theres a period of prolonged bad weather.

If you haven’t heard about a new appointment within seven working days, you can check the status of your booking online at direct.gov.uk/drivingtest.

Roadwise proudly sponsors Safe Drive, Stay Alive 2nd-5th November

No one can afford to miss this hard hitting show getting the message of road safety across to thousands of young people who are at the start of their driving life.

Members of the public are invited to experience an emotive film and stage show that will leave many speechless as it illustrates how lives can change in seconds with real life stories from people affected by a car crash.   Chairman of the Aberdeenshire Community Safety Partnership William Munro said “Safe Drive Stay Alive is not just an event for drivers or learners but for everyone. We want to show the consequences of different actions and how a split second can affect the lives of a family, the emergency services and friends.”

Dave Watson, the founding director of Roadwise, said “safe Drive Stay Alive is an excellent event which we are proud to be associated with. At Roadwise we are committed to positively changing people’s attitudes to driving and the message of road safety is one our instructors teach everyday”.

All road users should be encouraged to develop good safety habits to address the potential dangers they face on a daily basis.  Simple messages such as encouraging drivers and passengers to wear seat belts and switch off mobile phones whilst driving will help highlight the small choices which can make a big difference on the road.

Safe Drive Stay Alive is a four-day event and school pupils in S5 from Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray will attend the show at the Beach Ballroom, Aberdeen from Tuesday, November 2 until Friday, November 5.

The evening session is free and opens on Wednesday, November 3 from 7.15pm.  For further information contact Kate Rigby on 01224 748994, by email at kate.rigby@aberdeenshire.gov.uk or just come along on the night.

More information on Safe Drive Stay Alive can be found at www.safedrivestayalive.org or on Bebo at www.bebo.com/safedrivestayalive

Organisers have warned that the show may not be suitable for children under the age of 16 due to the content.
