As autumn approaches, the Highways Agency is asking drivers to watch out for deer. It is estimated that a staggering 74,000 deer may be involved in vehicle collisions each year in Britain. This brings with it a significant danger to drivers. Several drivers are killed every year and as many as 700 are injured as a result of collisions involving deer.

Research indicates that the periods of highest risk are autumn and spring, and around dawn and dusk. A key to reducing the number and severity of deer-vehicle collisions is for drivers to be deer aware. This means slowing down and taking extra care when you see a deer close to the edge of the road.

The driving test is changing as of 4 October 2010. The Governments commitment to reducing the number of accidents involving new drivers has led to the introduction of an independent driving section of the test.
During a10 minute period of your driving test you will be required to drive on your own without continual direction from your examiner. You will be required to drive either by following a series of directions or following traffic signs, or a mixture of both.
For example, your examiner might say, I want you to take the 2
nd right, then the 1
st right, 2
nd left and finally the 2
nd left. Confused? Don’t worry. If you forget the instructions when you start driving you can always ask your examiner to repeat the directions. You may even be shown a simple diagram of the road layout which should help you picture what you are being asked to do.
An example of driving while following traffic signs might include you being asked to drive to the nearest bus station. You don’t need to have a good geographical knowledge of the area. You simply have to follow the sign posts directing you to the requested location.
Finally, your examiner may use a mixture of the two methods outlined above during your independent drive.
Remember you are not being examined on your knowledge of the area. It’s about demonstrating that you can make important decisions by yourself and more importantly, make decisions safely.
Your Roadwise driving instructor will make sure you are well prepared for this part of the test.

We would like to hear your thoughts on the new section of the driving test. Do you think it’s a good idea? Will the change affect your confidence after passing your test? Have you already experienced independent driving during your lessons? Let us know!
