Trailer towing trainingRoadwise Driver Training is proud to offer car and trailer training (B+E) to private and corporate clients.

Our professional, approved DSA Driving Instructors will work closely with you, using up-to-date teaching techniques ensuring you are equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge and attitude required to pass the additional practical test.

If you passed a car test on or after 1 January 1997 you are limited to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes maximum authorised mass (MAM), towing a trailer up to 750kgs, or a vehicle and trailer combination up to 3.5 tonnes MAM providing the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle.   You will need to pass an additional driving test in B+E if you wish to tow a caravan or trailer combination which exceeds these weights.

Why not use our flow diagram which can be used to help establish whether or not you require a B+E entitlement.*  Click here to open in a new window.

The Car and trailer test (B+E) is based on the HGV driving test and lasts for approximately one hour.

The towing test includes:

  • Vehicle safety questions

  • An off-road reverse manoeuvre

  • controlled stop

  • Uncoupling and coupling of the trailer

  • Driving on the road

For car drivers who have limited or no experience in towing, an extended course may be offered enabling the driver to gain more experience before sitting their test.
