LGV / HGV Training

Service Updates

We welcome lorry licence acquisition enquiries for Class 2 (Cat C) and Class 1 (C+E).    Please let us know what type of licence you are looking to acquire by completing this LGV/ HGV Training enquiry form.

Some rules about learning to drive an HGV (Class 1) vehicle are going to change later in 2021.

The changes will affect: (1) what learners are allowed to learn to drive and take their driving test in and (2) how the driving test works.

Currently you have to learn to drive and pass a driving test in a large rigid lorry (category C) before you can learn to drive and take a test in a large articulated lorry (category C+E). This law is going to change allowing you to learn to drive an articulated lorry when you get your first provisional lorry licence and take your test in a large articulated lorry without having to pass one in a large rigid lorry first.

When you pass your test in a large articulated lorry (C+E), you’ll then be allowed to drive:

  • a medium-sized lorry (C1)
  • a medium-sized lorry towing a trailer (C1+E)
  • a large rigid lorry (C)
  • a large articulated lorry (C+E)

Furthermore, the proposed changes will change the layout of the Driver CPC part 3 - the test is going to be split into 2 parts:

Driver CPC part 3a (off-road exercises) test: Your trainer will not be allowed to assess you. It will be another trainer. The off-road exercises will still include an ‘S’ shaped reverse into a bay and showing the uncoupling and recoupling procedure if you’re taking a test with a trailer. The test will still be assessed to the same standard.  Driver CPC part 3a must be done before you can take the Driver CPC part 3b test.

Driver CPC part 3b (on-road driving) test. DVSA will continue to provide the Driver CPC part 3b test.

Looking to drive Class 2 (Category C) only?

If you do not want to drive anything bigger than a large rigid lorry, then you are able to learn to drive and take a driving test in a large rigid lorry (category C).

Until the law changes later in autumn 2021 we carry on following the current rules about learning to drive a lorry and what vehicles learner drivers are allowed to drive.

The law will change as soon as possible, but the date has not yet been confirmed.

As the practical implementation of the changes is not yet clear, we ask for your patience and understanding.  The changes may have an effect on the pricing structure, e.g. having to involve another trainer to cater for Driver CPC part 3a test.  It is also not clarified yet if/how the practical test fees for the Module 3 test are going to be affected.

Please stay in touch with us and we will keep you updated as the changes come into full effect. Please fill in this enquiry form  to allow us to better understand your lorry training needs and keep you updated.

Currently, it is estimated that there is a shortfall of as many as 90,000 trained truck drivers in the UK caused by a combination of Brexit, changes to rules and lockdown preventing training of new drivers for much of the last 18 months.

A gig economy and largely increased online shopping has led to a massive demand for delivery /multi drop drivers. This situation puts employers in a position of not having a large base of candidates to choose from.   This means that now may be the perfect time to think about driving a lorry for a living.

Roadwise offers a range of driver LGV Training services that are designed to provide delegates with the maximum opportunity to practice the skills necessary to pass the appropriate DVSA driving test.

The Category C driving licence allows people to drive rigid vehicles up to 32 tonnes. These vehicles can include bin wagons, tippers, flat-beds and curtain-sided vehicles. The course content is aimed at fully preparing candidates by teaching them the correct driving techniques and procedures to reach the standard required in order to pass a DVSA driving test.  Courses are delivered in a class 2 (rigid) lorry.  Due to Covid-19 training is conducted on a 1:1 basis.

Download our guide detailing the procedure for Applying for a LGV Licence / Driver CPC Initial Qualification.  When a candidate passes a Category C driving test, they also have the automatic entitlement to drive vehicles in Category C1.  Please visit our LinkedIn page showcasing our trainees, their stories and news from our company in relation to LGV/HGV training.
